Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe. You’ll never find hydrogen by itself, though. It’s always attached to other atoms to form molecules. You’ve probably heard of H2O – two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom make the molecule for water. Hydrogen is also part of plants and fossil fuels. Because hydrogen is found in so many different things, every region of the world will be able to make its own fuel.
Hydrogen is a simple atom, one proton and one electron. It is very light—lighter than helium—and is an excellent carrier of energy. (Electricity is also a carrier of energy.) As a fuel, hydrogen is as safe as other fuels, but is not harmful to the environment.
