How long will it last? Where will I go for repairs?

Today’s vehicles are designed to last 150,000 miles. When ready for market, fuel cells will last that lifetime. In recent years, CaFCP members Ballard Power Systems and UTC Power have made great progress in durability.

Fuel cell vehicles have very few moving parts. CaFCP members anticipate that these vehicles will need less maintenance and repair—FCVs don’t need engine oil, spark plugs, belts, gaskets, transmission fluid or many other routine items. Early on, all repairs will be done by dealers, but CaFCP is already working with schools that teach automotive technology to prepare future mechanics.

At a six month review by the Department of Energy, the fuel cell buses in operation had 47% lower maintenance costs and 44% lower parts costs than diesel buses.
