Fuel cells are very energy efficient. An FCV averages 50-60 miles to the equivalent of a gallon of gasoline. (One kilogram of hydrogen has about the same energy content as a gallon of gasoline.)
Most vehicles carry between two and four kilograms of hydrogen, averaging 100-220 miles on a tank of fuel. Newer vehicles are carrying more fuel and are averaging 280-300 miles on a tank of fuel. When the vehicles are ready for market, they will have a range of 300-500 miles on a tank of fuel.
Fuel cell buses are averaging 6-8 miles per kilogram, compared to four miles for diesel. Buses have far greater fuel storage and can run 400 miles or more on a tank of fuel.
