The Department of Energy has a goal that retail hydrogen will cost the same—or less—than gasoline. Right now, though, hydrogen is not a retail product sold to consumers. Commercial hydrogen used in industrial applications costs $2-5 per kilogram.
Fuel cells are very energy efficient, using 50-60% of the energy in the fuel. By comparison, an internal combustion engine gets about 20% of the energy from its fuel. A kilogram of hydrogen will take the average fuel cell vehicle 50 miles—about twice as far as a gallon of gasoline.
