Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe and an excellent carrier of energy. When used in a fuel cell, it has twice the energy efficiency of an internal combustion engine. In addition, hydrogen is non-toxic, non-corrosive and benign to the environment.
The three main benefits of using hydrogen and fuel cells are:
- Zero tailpipe emissions – a hydrogen-powered fuel cell vehicle emits only water vapor and a little heat from the tailpipe.
- Potential for reducing carbon emissions – hydrogen can be produced from renewable resources such as biomass, solar, geothermal and wind power, creating an opportunity for complete zero-carbon transportation.
- Energy diversity – hydrogen can be obtained from many sources and produced in a variety of ways, allowing every country to produce fuel using its own resources.
