Hydrogen uses to be determined by delivery methods
Publish Date: 10/12/2022

Transportation is a crucial puzzle to solve since the most favourable production locations are found in often remote, renewable-rich areas, while demand will be focused in heavily industrialized and densely populated areas, Weichenhain said in a Roland Berger study he authored, ‘Hydrogen transportation: the key to unlocking the clean hydrogen economy.’

Hyster begins first-ever, real-world pilot of hydrogen fuel cell-powered container handler at CMA CGM-owned Fenix Marine terminal in the Port of Los Angeles
Publish Date: 10/11/2022

Hyster Company announces testing of a top-pick container handler powered by hydrogen fuel cells (HFC) at Fenix Marine Services in the Port of Los Angeles. Building on the industry standard Hyster® H1050-1150XD-CH top-pick container handler design, the truck is powered by two 45kw hydrogen fuel cells from Nuvera, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hyster parent company Hyster-Yale Group. A California Climate Investments grant awarded by the California Air Resources Board in 2018 helped support development of the HFC-powered container handler.

Promising signs in electrolyser manufacturing add to growing momentum for low-emissions hydrogen
Publish Date: 9/22/2022

Taking into account today’s policy settings by governments, the new report estimates that global hydrogen demand is set to reach 115 million tonnes by 2030. If governments fully deliver on their current climate pledges, that number could rise to 130 million tonnes, with more than a quarter of it being met by low-emissions hydrogen. A similar amount of global hydrogen demand would be for new applications in that scenario.

DOE Awards Heliogen $4.1M for Decarbonization Project
Publish Date: 10/7/2022

The Department of Energy (DOE) awarded Pasadena, Calif.-based Heliogen $4.1 million to demonstrate a concentrated solar-thermal power (CSP) process for heating limestone to 950°C, which could reduce the carbon emissions in portland cement production.

CSP technologies deploy mirrors to beam sunlight onto a receiver, and can be used to deliver heat for energy-intensive industrial processes or generate electricity using a turbine.

California Launches Statewide Alliance to Establish Federally Co-Funded Hydrogen Hub
Publish Date: 10/6/2022

Hydrogen provides an extremely promising pathway to eradicate toxic and carcinogenic diesel emissions and the burden they create on frontline communities throughout the state,” said Eli Lipmen, Executive Director of Move LA, a coalition building nonprofit. “We look forward to continue working with ARCHES to further build a coalition that will ensure these historic investments deliver direct benefits to our most impacted communities.”

This partnership relies on the globally recognized intellectual capital of the entire University of California (UC) System and the three National Labs that the UC oversees—in partnership with the State of California, leading cities, organized labor, industry, and NGOs—with a foundation of strong state policies, in collaboration with the communities all of us serve.

“One of the key lessons we’ve learned in the more than twenty years of the California Fuel Cell Partnership (now the Hydrogen Fuel Cell Partnership) is that success requires active collaboration between government, industry, NGOs, and communities,” said Joe Cappello, Chair, Hydrogen Fuel Cell Partnership and CEO of Iwatani of North America. “ARCHES is set up to foster partnerships like we have, and our members are committed to its success in California and beyond.”

Four electrolyser gigafactories to be built in France as part of €2.1bn state-aid hydrogen push
Publish Date: 9/30/2022

Electrolyser makers McPhy, Genvia, Elogen and John Cockerill will build new gigafactories in France after being allocated millions of euros of public funding as part of a €2.1bn ($2.05bn) state-aid push to make the country “the world leader in carbon-free hydrogen”.

The money will be split between ten French hydrogen companies, with a particular focus on electrolysis and equipment for commercial fuel-cell trucks (details below), Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne revealed in a speech this week.
