Fuel cell buses are on the road!
Three CaFCP member transit agencies operate zero-emissions fuel cell buses in daily revenue service. Since 1999, these members have placed nine fuel cell buses in California and traveled more than 165,000 miles on California’s roads and highways. The buses are quiet, clean and have excellent performance. All three transit agencies report that people will pass up a diesel bus if they know a fuel cell bus is coming soon.
In the Palm Springs area, SunLine Transit Authority operates one fuel cell bus and Oakland’s AC Transit operates three buses. All are Van Hool buses that use UTC Power fuel cells. ISE Corporation was the bus integrator. In the Silicon Valley, Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority three buses powered by Ballard Power Systems fuel cells.
Other CaFCP members involved with fuel cell bus demonstrations include the U.S. Department of Transportation FTA Program (doc1 and doc2), U.S. Department of Energy, California Energy Commission, California Air Resources Board, Toyota, and Chevron.
